Fun with Andrew, Me and a Hooker
Sunday, September 24th, 2006Friday was an interesting day for me and my buddy Andrew who just recently graduated btw.
So in the morning, we were listening to a speech my the former prime minister of Malaysia himself. Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohd. Sadly, he was rather unprepared for the speech and the points were not so relevant to the topic. Interesting bit about this was the fact he claims he is still a politician and his wife dont talk to him much.
So after that uneventful speech, Andrew and I went to 1Utama for the intention to do some Rock Climbing. Andrew has been my belaying partner for my first few climbing experience and it has been about 3 years since we both climbed together.
We arrived at Camp5 in 1Utama about 1.45pm and talked to the guy in the counter about wanting to climb. The guys went on to explain the various packages that we can take. Since both of us were in business shirt, the guy asked if we had any climbing experinces. Oh course we answered yes.
Without much trust in us telling the truth, he explained that we need to enroll in a Rm100 per person course to learn the basic safety and climbing techniques. He then asked out do you know how to climb. Andrew told him, its been a while since we last climb. The guy said we cannot climb the day package which cost only rm 35 per person as we do not know the basic. The guy also said, that he will test us on the basic in order for us to qualified without attending the RM100 course.
So Andrew and I, said, we will be back when the place is open at 2.30. While both of us going down the elevator, we were trying to figure out what are the methods of typing a secure knots. Both of us are so motivated to climb on Friday that we were figuring out what we remembered from our last climb at the Summit Gym. The the idea hit us. We dashed to MPH and asked the lady in counter to direct us to the books on Rock Climbing.
From then, we hit the books on Rock Climbing, learning all the relevant knots and techniques in order to save RM100. We were even, praticing tying the knots with the ropes from Andrew’s bag.
At 2.30, we went to the gym, thinking of being test on rock climbing. Fortunately for both of us. The counter was handled by another guy. Althought he did asked us, if we know the basic knots, we werent tested on it.
Great thing was, both of us actually know how to do knots perfectly and enjoyed a few hours of scalling the wall. Attempting various stupid poses and climbing methods while making a few friends along. To be honest…you get one of the best views from rockclimbing especially if you are the belayer.
As for the hooker? well…it is actually a carabiners that you latch on to your harness and your belaying devices. The whole time we were climbing..Dr Andrew keep refering it to a hooker.
The other climbers looked extremmely confused when he ask for the hooker. Luckily we were not tested on naming equipments of else we wont not have made the climb.
